I was trying to find some good prayers for different seasons of the Liturgical Calendar with allusions to moments in the Church’s history, but I was out of luck. Thus, I wrote some myself. I think I’m allowed to do that… I’ve placed in square brackets the influences on each.
1. Everlasting Father, by the power of Thy Holy Spirit Thou madest Christ to dwell in the Blessed Virgin, the ark of the New Covenant. In a like manner, we beseech Thee, to send forth Thy Spirit into the hearts of us, your servants, so that Christ might dwell there by faith, and bring us new and everlasting life, being all in all. Amen. [Meister Eckhart inspired this one with his doctrine of the Eternal Word being born in our hearts]
2. Lord Jesus, you obeyed the call of the Father to come unto your own, but they did not receive you. In this season may your Word go forth again in the midst of the same sinful world, so that we and our neighbours might be fetched to Christ through the haunting of the Holy Ghost, singing thanksgiving to our gracious Father. Amen. [Luther’s Large Catechism on Sanctification as being ‘fetched to Christ’]
3. O God unto whom all sinners appear stained as crimson, we pray that by your Word, Spirit, and holy sacraments, you would lead us to trust in Christ, and cover our sin like snow with His righteousness. In this season where we see Advent candles, may your Spirit burn within our hearts, may the Christmas trees, remind us of the curse your Son endured for our sins, and like the chocolate so abundant at this time, may we enjoy the sweetness of your promises. Amen. [Contemporary life, and Martin Luther’s analogy of the snow covered dung heap]
Some of these, especially the last one, are lackluster, but it’s my first time writing prayers so I’ll say there’s room for improvement.
