In recent years, church congregations have grown in numbers. This growth can be attributed to:

  • Increased missionary efforts by local and international missionaries
  • Integration of African cultural practices into church worship, making it more relatable.
  • More focus on youth-censed programs
  • Provision of social support to local communities (education, health, etc.)
  • Strong spiritual beliefs that make the people of Africa more reception to religious teachings
  • An emphasis on communal worship and church community events
  • Economic challenges that make more people turn to the church for hope and support
  • Media campaigns and programs highlighting the church and its beliefs
  • Dynamic pastors who offer inspirational and encouraging messages

Here is a list of the biggest churches in Africa.

10. Doxa Deo Church

  • The Doxa Deo Church has 34 campuses in nine cities around the world. These cities include Pretoria, Johannesburg, Bloemfontein, Durban, Port Elizabeth, and Cape Town in South Africa, as well as London, Auckland, and Stuttgart. It has an average weekly attendance of 30,000 at its campuses in South Africa.

9. The Lord’s Chosen Charismatic Revival Ministries

  • The Lord’s Chosen Charismatic Revival Ministries was founded by Pastor Lazarus Muoka in 2002. It has 3 million branches worldwide, including 350 branches in Lagos and over 100 branches in each state of the federation.
  • This church’s mission focuses on the “10 Billion Souls Mandate”, based on the direction given to its founder when he began the church.
  • This church has a weekly attendance of 30,000 members.

8. Word of Life Bible Church

  • The Word of Life Bible Church is one of the biggest churches in Africa, with a weekly attendance of 30,000 members. This church was founded in 1987 by Ayo Oritsejafor, a prominent pastor who served as the president of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN).
  • This church was started in a classroom after which it moved to a warehouse and then an open field. It is currently headquartered in Warri, Delta State, Nigeria.

7. Christ Embassy (Believers Love World Fellowship)

  • Pastor Chris Oyakhilome founded Christ Embassy, also known as Believers Love World Fellowship, in 1987. This church aims to take the divine presence of God to the nations of the world as it demonstrates the character of the Spirit.
  • This church has a weekly attendance of 30,000 people.

 6. Christian Revival Church (CRC)

  • The Christian Revival Church (CRC) was started by Pastor At Boshoff in 1994. It is a multicultural, multiracial church located in South Africa with a weekly attendance of 32,000.
  • This church has grown from a single church in Bloemfontein to a global ministry with campuses in South Africa and all over the world.

5. United Family International Church

  • The United Family International Church was founded in 2008 by Emmanuel and Ruth Makandiwa. It is a global ministry that has its headquarters at Chitungwiza, a city near Harare, Zimbabwe.
  • The mission of this church is to impact lives through supernatural manifestation, prophetic insight, and biblical revelation.
  • This church has a weekly attendance of 35,000 people.

4. The Apostolic Church Nigeria

  • The Apostolic Church was established in 1950. It is part of the Apostolic Church Movement. This church has a weekly attendance of 40,000 people and a total of 4.5 million members.
  • This church focuses on teaching its congregants about the teachings of the Bible, the power of prayer, and the importance of the Holy Spirit.

3. Redeemed Christian Church of God

  • The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) is another of the biggest churches in Africa. It was founded in 1952 by Pastor Josiah Akindayomi in Ebute-Metta, Lagos, Nigeria, and has its headquarters in Redemption Camp located approximately 45 minutes from Lagos, Nigeria.
  • This church has a total membership of 5 million members and a weekly attendance of 50,000 people.

2. Winners Chapel (Living Faith Church) Nigeria

  • Winners Chapel, officially known as Living Faith Church, has a weekly attendance of 50,000 members and a total of 6 million members in 65 countries.
  • This church was founded by Dr. David Odeyepo in 1981 in Kaduna, Nigeria. It is one of the largest churches in Nigeria.
  • This church’s mission is to spread the gospel to the world through demonstrating God’s power and teaching the Word of Faith.

1. Deeper Life Bible Church

  • The Deeper Life Bible Church has a weekly attendance of 65,000 people, making it one of the largest churches in Africa. It has 500 churches in Lagos, 5000 in the rest of Nigeria, and 3000 all over the world. It has also sent missionaries to 40 countries n Africa.
  • This church was founded by Pastor William F. Kumuyi in 1973, a former lecturer in mathematics at the University of Lagos.

These biggest churches in Africa are a clear indication that the Christian faith continues to gather ground in the continent and that people’s lives are being transformed positively by their faith in Christ.
