Looking for Community Based Projects in Kenya

Over the next 2-3 years, the UK government will send 2,500 young British people out to work as volunteers in developing countries. The programme is fully funded by the UK government’s Department for International Development.

Advance Africa has been approached to locate suitable projects and coordinate placement of volunteers in Kenya. We urgently need big projects in Kenya for this program.

As part of the program, groups of 12-16 volunteers travel out from the UK together and undertake a 10-week volunteering placement in a developing country.

At the end of each placement, each group of volunteers travel back to the UK together.

The placement must meet the following requirements:­

• It must give volunteers an opportunity to be immersed in the local community/culture­
• It must be within easy reach of a suitable medical centre­
• It must have failsafe communications (i.e. telephone, strong mobile phone signal)­
• It must be in an area/community that is safe and secure for volunteers (with respects to political stability, crime, natural disasters, etc)

The volunteers work all together, or split into 2-3 smaller groups, within one project or community. The project must meet the following requirements:­

• It must be community-based and locally run­
• There must be a project supervisor in attendance at all times (if the volunteers are split into smaller groups for work, there must be one supervisor per group)­
• It must be appropriate for a group of volunteers with mixed/limited skills­
• It must provide a clear benefit to the local community­
• It must not displace local workers­
• It must be sustainable and long-term (i.e. able to operate for a minimum of 1 year and accommodate a minimum of 5-6 subsequent groups of volunteers.

One group should ‘hand over’ to the next (although there is likely to be a 1 week gap between groups due to in-country orientation)

The range of projects to which we are currently sending volunteers includes construction, education, conservation, etc.

Most existing projects involve an element of physical work (such as building), as well as an element of community work (such as youth work).

We are currently interested at looking at projects within a wide range of areas, including child care & teaching (e.g. orphanages) and health (e.g. malaria prevention or HIV/AIDS projects).

If you have a big project which can sustain consecutive groups up to 16 volunteers for at least 18 months. Or several projects which can sustain smaller groups in one locality, please get in touch ASAP.
